Elephant Facts

This section of the website contains some facts about elephants. There is a lot to know about elephants so there is also a page of links to other sites about elephants where you can learn even more. First, some facts about how the elephant evolved.

  • The elephant's earliest ancestors evolved in Africa around 60 million years ago during the Eocene period.
  • Around 8 million years ago these ancestors split into 2 species, the African and the Asian elephants. This was around the end of the Miocene period.
  • Elephants' closest living relations genetically are hyraxes, manatees and dugongs.
